HOW PLANTS HELP FIGHT SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

HOW PLANTS HELP FIGHT SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

Do you feel that your mood worsens when the days get shorter and grayer? Did you know that indoor plants help you feel better? We'll tell you how.

Your mood is directly related to the change of seasons. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that tends to occur as we receive less sunlight in Autumn and Winter. Feeling sadness, anguish, irritability or loneliness, as well as tiredness, insomnia or loss of concentration are the most common symptoms for those suffering from this problem.

Having plants in our homes, creating an oasis of calm, helps improve symptoms of seasonal depression. A garden in our homes is a reminder of Spring and taking care of plants is an effective therapy to make your days happier.

We give you some tips to alleviate some of the symptoms of seasonal depression using your plants:

  • While working, place at least one plant in your field of vision, whether at home or in the office.
  • Take breaks during your day, taking the opportunity to look at your plants, even if just for five minutes.
  • On the weekend, with a little more time, give yourself the luxury of meditating while taking care of your plants, feeling their potting soil, cleaning their leaves or simply looking at them.
  • Create a retreat corner at home, bringing together several plants to make you feel like you are in a small jungle. Take the opportunity to read a good book, listen to your favorite music, or do some exercise.
